Sony WH-1000XM6: The King of Noise Cancellation Returns
Introduction
Sony's WH-1000X series has dominated the premium noise-cancelling headphone market for years. With the XM6, Sony faces the challenge of improving on what was already a near-perfect product.
Design & Comfort
The XM6 takes a refined approach to the XM5 design with softer ear cushions and a slightly adjusted headband pressure. For extended wear, these are among the most comfortable premium headphones available. The foldable design makes them travel-friendly.
Active Noise Cancellation
Sony's new Dual Processor Noise Cancellation technology is a genuine leap forward. The XM6 handles high-frequency noise like voices and machinery better than any previous Sony model. In office environments and on planes, you'll find yourself forgetting the world exists.
Sound Quality
The 40mm driver has been redesigned with a lighter diaphragm for improved transient response. Bass remains impactful and controlled, midrange is lush and detailed, and treble extension is smooth without harshness. The LDAC codec support ensures high-res wireless audio when connected to compatible devices.
Battery Life
Sony claims 40 hours with ANC on — an improvement over the XM5's 30 hours. In our testing, we consistently achieved 36-38 hours at moderate volumes with ANC enabled. The quick charge feature (10 minutes for 5 hours of playback) remains tremendously useful.
Verdict
The WH-1000XM6 cements Sony's position at the top of the noise-cancelling headphone category. If you already own XM5s, the improvement is real but incremental. If you're buying your first premium ANC headphones, these are the ones to get.
